It is a privilege to be able to teach your student physical education. It is an integral part of their development and my goal is to make it a lifelong pursuit. Not only will the students learn physical skills, but the importance of social etiquette in sport will be emphasized. Locomotor and non-locomotor movements, balance, rhythm, throwing, catching, and striking with hands and feet are the skills that will be taught that are developmentally appropriate. The areas of academic knowledge and skills will include: fitness, motor skills and movement patterns, movement concepts and principles, and personal and social responsibility.
The Fitnessgram test will be administered for students in grades one through five. This is a Georgia Department of Education requirement. This is a national fitness test that measures different components of physical fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body mass index). The results of the test will be sent home at the end of the year for grades four and five. If you read the interpretation of the data, there are suggestions made to help improve their scores. This information can be very useful in assessing your student's strengths and weaknesses and it gives them a focal point so they will try to improve their scores.
Coming prepared to Physical Education is very important for the safety of your child. Wearing tennis shoes will make it possible for your child to do the activities without being concerned about getting injured. Heals, boots, sandals, and crocs are not appropriate. Wearing socks will prolong the life of their tennis shoes and be more sanitary. Girls should wear pants or shorts with a comfortable shirt that covers their body; skirts and dresses may get dirty or ripped so it is not suggested that they be worn. Boys should wear pants that stay up by themselves or wear a belt if necessary; it is difficult to do activities while trying to hold your pants up.
If your child has a medical concern that I should be aware of, please send a note to the clinic. If for some reason they need to be excused from PE, please send a note explaining the reason and let me know when they will be able to participate.
I appreciate your support and I look forward to teaching your child.
